Five Short Journaling and Creative Prompts for a Busy Week

2 min read

A cup of coffee goes cold on the counter. Somewhere a phone buzzes. The week is moving faster than you are.

You are welcome here, even in the rush. You do not need an hour. You do not need a studio. You need a pencil, a scrap of paper, and about five minutes.

Here are five gentle prompts. Pick one. Leave the rest for another day.

1. Draw your morning cup

Sketch the mug in front of you. Add steam. Then write one line: "Today I am thankful for"

Looking closely at something ordinary is already a kind of prayer.

2. Make a border of thanks

Draw a row of small shapes. In each one, write a single word for something you are thankful for today. Color them in with whatever you have.

By the end, you have a little border of gratitude.

3. Scribble the worry, then shape it

Scribble on the page for thirty seconds with no plan. Then turn the scribble into something: a bird, a flower, a path.

Write one sentence beside it: "I hand this to You." A messy start can become something good. That is true on paper, and it is true in life.

4. Copy a verse in your own lettering

Choose a short verse, like "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10, NIV). Write it slowly in big letters. Decorate the edges if you like.

Copying Scripture by hand makes you read every word. If you want to go deeper, read How to Start Scripture Journaling: A Beginner's Guide.

5. Draw where you want to rest

Sketch a place, real or imagined, where you feel safe. A porch, a field, a kitchen table. Add one small detail that reminds you of God's care.

But I do not have time

Five minutes is enough. Tie one prompt to something you already do, like the first cup of coffee or the last light switched off.

Keep your pages in a folder. In a few weeks, look back. You may find a record of how God met you in small moments. For more ways to pray with your hands, see Art as Prayer: 7 Simple Creative Practices.

And if you want more

And remember: You can't do art wrong. This is your art and your vision.

The Mosaic Mail Club brings a print, a devotional, Scripture, and a prompt like these to your mailbox each month. This is for you. Take it. Or find a print to keep beside your journal in the Shop prints.

Blessings, Erin
